West Ham United internal discussions held over Graham Potter after Ruben Amorim setback

West Ham United have reportedly held internal discussions over the possibility of appointing Graham Potter this summer after suffering a setback in their pursuit of Ruben Amorim, according to 90min.

The report on 23 April reveals that the Hammers viewed their approach for Sporting CP manager Amorim as “a long shot” and are discussing Potter – who is yet to take up a new head coaching position since leaving Chelsea a year ago – and Lille boss Paulo Fonseca.

Julen Lopetegui is also thought to be viewed as a more “feasible” target, particularly as – like Potter – he remains unattached since leaving Wolves last August.

Would Graham Potter be a good fit at West Ham United?

Should David Moyes opt not to renew his contract at the end of this season and leave West Ham, Hammers fans will be keen to see a manager appointed who implements a more dominant, progressive style of football than the Scotsman.

Potter certainly fits the bill in that respect – fluid, possession-based football has been on display at all his previous clubs, from Ostersund to Swansea City, Brighton and then Chelsea.

While the Solihull-born tactician’s time with the Blues was less than successful, the subsequent struggles of Frank Lampard and now Mauricio Pochettino suggest that Potter was not solely to blame.

His work at Swansea and particularly Brighton is a better case study for the style Hammers fans could expect to see at the London Stadium, where he was lauded for the quality of football his teams produced.

If Moyes does depart and Amorim proves unattainable, Potter could prove an astute appointment.
