West Ham United in talks to seal January transfer number one at London Stadium

West Ham have held preliminary talks with the representatives of Steven Bergwijn to discuss a January transfer move to the London Stadium, according to The Sun.

The newspaper reported via their website on 6 January that, while a deal remains a long way off with plenty of pieces yet to fall into place, the Dutchman is desperate to move back to the Premier League.

It is also said that any deal will heavily depend on whether the Hammers can sell players to raise funds, while Ajax are unlikely to sanction a loan deal for their club captain.

One to watch

A January move for Bergwijn makes plenty of sense for the Hammers. If they can raise the money to get it done, he should be right at the top of their list of options, and he would fit in perfectly at the London Stadium.

His spell at Tottenham didn’t exactly set the world alight, but there is definitely a player there and one that has started to get back to his best in the Eredivisie. Seven goals and two assists this season in 13 games, despite the club’s poor form, shows what he can do.

The Dutchman may not be able to replicate what Mohammed Kudus did and will continue to do in a West Ham shirt when he returns from the African Cup of Nations, but he is a strong option to fill the void and provide plenty of strength in depth.

Aside from his talent, Bergwijn is also able to play anywhere across the front three, which would allow him to slot perfectly into David Moyes’ interchangeable trio which usually consists of Lucas Paqueta, Jarrod Bowen and Kudus.

In other West Ham news, a star player has been ruled out until the end of January.
