West Ham United hold talks with agent of Mats Hummels about free transfer move

West Ham United have held talks with the agent of Mats Hummels about signing him on a free transfer, according to HITC.

Writing on their website (17 June), the news outlet report that the players’ representatives have reached out to a number of Premier League clubs after he left Borussia Dortmund at the end of his contract.

Hummels was a key member of the side that reached the Champions League final in the 2023/24 season and also won the World Cup with Germany back in 2014, and Julen Lopetegui is keen to add to his defensive options this summer.

West Ham United to sign Mats Hummels?

Hummels is one of the best defenders of his generation and in his prime was arguably the very best in the world, but he is 35-years-old now.

He was never the quickest but with the ball at his feet he still is one of the best around, and there is no doubting that whoever manages to sign him this summer will be getting an absolute coup.

The veteran German has all the physical attributes to succeed in the Premier League, and with question marks surrounding the futures of Nayef Aguerd [Hakim Zhouri, 11 May] and captain Kurt Zouma there is a need for new defenders.

Angelo Ogbonna has also already left and Hummels would be able to step into the starting lineup with relative ease and potentially even lift the level of the team.

It would be a brilliant signing but a lot will come down to what offers he gets and what his priorities are, but the Hammers should definitely be interested.

In other West Ham news, Julen Lopetegui is insisting that the club sign this Barcelona star this summer.
