West Ham United fired new transfer demand amid Igor Jesus speculation
Tom Rennie has demanded West Ham United sign a “midfielder who can run” after transfer links with Igor Jesus.
Reports suggest that the Hammers could sign the attacker during the January transfer window, with a potential swap deal that would see Lucas Paqueta move to Botafago in a £30million move mooted [The Sun on Sunday, 3 November, page 55].
While it is unclear whether or not the deal will be completed in the new year, talkSPORT broadcaster Rennie has told the Irons the only transfer he is interested in is a more athletic midfielder.
Writing on X on Monday (4 November) Rennie said: “The only transfer I want to see is a midfielder who can run.”
Are West Ham close to any new signings ahead of the January transfer window?
While it is good to see the Hammers are looking to add some firepower to Julen Lopetegui’s squad during the January window, midfield is certainly the bigger problem area currently at the London Stadium.
Guido Rodriguez has looked nowhere near the pace of the Premier League in the early stages of his West Ham career, Edson Alvarez has been reckless in and out of possession while Tomas Soucek hasn’t been anywhere near his best.
Unless a more athletic midfielder is signed when the January window opens, it is hard to see how Lopetegui can turn things around. Games are won and lost in the middle of the park and the Irons are constantly overrun.
Of course, adding another option up top would be excellent, especially given Niclas Fullkrug’s injury struggles, but it wouldn’t be the solution to all of the Hammers’ problems.
Hopefully, Tim Steidten and his recruitment team are already looking at alternative midfield options so that they can agree on a deal quickly when the transfer window opens.
Whether or not Lopetegui is still in charge is almost by the by. No matter who the manager is, this midfield isn’t fit to compete in the top half of the Premier League.
