West Ham United favourites to sign Maxwel Cornet – Alan Nixon

West Ham are still considered favourites to sign Maxwel Cornet from Burnley this summer, although a quick deal isn’t expected says Alan Nixon.

The Hammers have completed four deals already this summer for Nayef Aguerd, Alphonse Areola, Flynn Downes and Gianluca Scamacca to take their spending to around £100m so far.

But a versatile left-sided player is wanted and with a deal for Filip Kostic seemingly stalling after they saw their bid rejected by Frankfurt [ExWHUemployee, July 28], attentions could be set to turn to Burnley ace Cornet.

In response to a fan on Twitter, The Sun journalist Nixon said; “Nothing ever moves quickly in the transfer world… but would make them [West Ham] favourites still.”

The Ivory Coast international has a £17.5m release clause and has already agreed personal terms with Everton according to a report in France, but Nixon believes that it’s the Hammers who lead the chase.

Interesting

West Ham have been known in recent windows to be tracking multiple players at the same time and negotiating deals for all of them before settling on the best deal.

Kostic is clearly the priority target right now for the David Moyes after a deal for David Raum was unattainable after he agreed to join Leipzig, but Cornet makes plenty of sense as an alternative.

West Ham

Negotiations won’t be difficult considering the player has a release clause and he’s also capable of playing at left-back, wing-back, winger or even as a striker.

That means that should the Kostic deal not happen, David Moyes already has another target in mind and the club can quickly pivot to get their business done as quickly as possible.

Fans should be excited at this new approach to a transfer window as it seems to be working, and players want to join West Ham for the project they’re building.
