West Ham United: David Moyes issues update on Thilo Kehrer exit after Tuesday development

West Ham manager David Moyes has revealed that the deal to take Thilo Kehrer to Monaco on loan is moving closer as far as he is aware.

But speaking in his post-match press conference following his side’s 0-0 draw with Brighton on Tuesday (2 December, via Sky Sports), the Scotsman said he “couldn’t know any more” on the Germany international’s situation than the reporters in the room.

It comes after the Evening Standard reported on Tuesday that the 27-year-old is in talks with the Ligue 1 club over a loan deal despite also revealing that several other sides across Europe, including Italian outfit Roma, are interested in signing the defender this month.

“I don’t know any more than you know [if he’s joining Monaco on loan],” said Moyes. “I think it’s moving towards that, but couldn’t know any more than you.”

Let him go

It seems as though West Ham have made their mind up that Kehrer can leave the club during this transfer window after he’s struggled to nail down a starting spot.

The defender, who can play across the backline, is believed to be looking to play more minutes in the second half of the season in a bid to make the Germany squad for the 2024 European Championships.

The Evening Standard reported that the deal with Monaco is expected to include an option-to-buy clause, which would secure the Hammers some money for him down the line.

It makes complete sense to allow the German to leave after he’s been largely underwhelming since joining the Irons from PSG in 2022.

With his wages off the books, we could potentially look to get someone else in to strengthen another area of the squad as we look to continue competing in the top half of the Premier League table this season.
