West Ham United are considering entering talks over a deal for Jonathan David following the conclusion of the Copa America, according to Give Me Sport.

The outlet reported on its website on Tuesday (9 July) that the Hammers could pounce if Canada crash out of the competition when they face Argentina in the semi-finals as they look for a new number nine.

Julen Lopetegui wants to secure some genuine competition for Michail Antonio at the top end of the field this summer and the Lille forward who scored for Canada in the Copa America has been pinpointed as a target.

At least five other Premier League clubs are understood to be keeping tabs on the Canadian International and he is expected to be available for a fee in the region of £30million [Give Me Sport, 20 June].

Will West Ham United sign a new striker this summer?

The Hammers appear to be very keen to get a deal for a new number nine over the line before the start of the new season as Lopetegui looks to address one of the biggest problems left behind by David Moyes.

David clearly isn't the only target on their radar with reports suggesting the Irons have also made an offer for and agreed on personal terms with Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran as they look to add a clinical edge to the team [Fabrizio Romano, 9 July].

Both players fit the Hammers' recruitment model of trying to sign younger talents with a view to selling them on for a bigger fee in the future, but the Canadian international does appear to be the cheaper option of the pair.

With talks not set to begin between Lille and West Ham until after the Copa America, the Irons may well be able to advance their negotiations with Duran first which could make him the more likely target to arrive in East London.

Hopefully, Lopetegui's side will be able to get at least one new centre-forward on their books before the new campaign gets underway.
