West Ham United close in on Wes Foderingham transfer as salary shared

West Ham United are set to complete the signing of goalkeeper Wes Foderingham as a free agent soon, according to Sean Whetstone.

Whetstone shared via his West Ham Football account on X [19 June] that the 33-year-old was “odds on” to switch to the London Stadium following his release by Sheffield United.

Foderingham made 30 Premier League appearances between the sticks for the Blades last season, and is set to be drafted in as a back-up option to Alphonse Areola and Lukasz Fabianski.

The goalkeeper will officially become a free agent on 30 June and is therefore free to sign for a new club on 1 July.

West Ham in frame to complete Foderingham deal

An experienced goalkeeper in the top flight seemingly content as a challenging number two – or three for now – and available on a free transfer, Foderingham is an astute deal for West Ham.

The former Rangers stopper’s wages will also not be an issue, reportedly earning what Whetstone describes as a “modest £12,500 per week” whilst at Bramall Lane with the Blades.

The deal to take Nathan Trott to FC Copenhagen will pave the way for Foderingham’s move to be rubber-stamped [The Athletic, 10 June], allowing crucial funds to be invested elsewhere in the squad as the Hammers go all out to elevate themselves into a permanent European fixture.

Between Foderingham, Fabianski and previously Darren Randolph too, the club have often taken the approach to maintain experience amongst the backup goalkeepers, with the savvy to be able to come straight into the side with little notice.

This signing therefore fits the bill and, given the wages and fee involved, makes it a risk-free move from the Irons’ perspective.
