West Ham United ‘best positioned’ to sign Sergi Roberto as Barcelona transfer update emerges

West Ham are one of the clubs “best positioned” to sign Barcelona’s Sergi Roberto, according to Catalunya Radio.

The Catalonian radio station reported via its ‘Tot Costa’ X account [25 July] that, alongside the Hammers, Aston Villa and Ajax are also interested in the 32-year-old.

While Deco has personally called the player to remain at the Nou Camp, there is currently no guarantee that the player will be registered ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

West Ham United in for Barcelona’s Sergi Roberto?

Given Julen Lopetegui’s previous links to the Spanish national team, it is no surprise to see veteran Spaniards linked with moves to the London Stadium this summer.

Roberto has been a long-standing servant for the La Liga giants, making 373 appearances since earning his debut in 2010, and although he only has 19 goals to his name, one of those has gone down in the history books.

Many football fans will remember the dramatic 6-1 Champions League match between Barcelona and PSG in 2017, with Roberto scoring the winner in the fifth minute of added time.

The 32-year-old is a tireless worker but has been under-utilised by Barcelona in recent seasons, having only started a total of 38 league matches over the last four campaigns.

Considering his versatility on the football pitch, being able to deputise in midfield and at right-back, it is understandable why Lopetegui would want to add such a player to his ranks this summer.

The injury to Edson Alvarez has left the Irons in a very difficult position [Knees Up Mother Brown], with the likes of Tomas Soucek and James Ward-Prowse unable to do the same job that the Mexican does in the middle of the park.

While Roberto is not an out-and-out defensive midfielder, he would give a lot of cover in that role as West Ham await the return of their first choice next season.
