West Ham United agree Maxwel Cornet transfer as medical underway for last-minute exit
West Ham United and Southampton have agreed a last-minute loan deal for Maxwel Cornet, according to Mark McAdam.
The Sky Sports journalist reported via Sky Sports News (30 August, 18:43) that the two Premier League rivals have agreed terms for the winger to join the Saints temporarily for the Premier League season.
Cornet is undergoing a medical with the Saints currently, but there is an expectation that Southampton may have to sanction a few exits before they can confirm any new arrivals this summer.
Speaking on Sky Sports News, McAdam said: “The latest breaking news is that Southampton have agreed a loan deal with West Ham, the fellow Premier League side for midfielder Maxwel Cornet. The 27-year-old who appeared 16 times for the Hammers last season.
“We understand Russell Martin is a big fan of his and a deal has been agreed with the two clubs. He is heading down to the South Coast for a medical.
“We understand that he is going through the formalities of that medical at the moment. However, there is one caveat with this deal, Southampton’s squad is quite big, therefore they need to try and find a couple of exit strategies for a couple of players.
“It shouldn’t affect the Maxwel Cornet deal, however, it is something that the club have to be aware of.”
Will Maxwel Cornet exit West Ham amid Southampton transfer rumours?
This deal has moved incredibly quickly in the final days of the summer transfer window, but it seems as though the Hammers have managed to get yet another first-team wage off of their books.
Julen Lopetegui has overseen a major revamp of the first-team squad since he arrived in East London this summer and while more incomings are expected on deadline day, outgoings may be just as important.

Cornet’s place in the Irons squad has all but vanished following the arrivals of Crysencio Summerville and Luis Guilherme. The Ivorian now falls behind both new signings and the likes of Jarrod Bowen, Mohammed Kudus and Lucas Paqueta in the pecking order.
Ultimately, the best course of action for all parties involved at this stage of the summer is a last-minute loan exit.
Cornet will be able to play regularly, the Irons clear some space in their squad and Southampton get a player with Premier League experience.
