West Ham United agree Flynn Downes transfer as medical update emerges

West Ham United have agreed a deal with Southampton for the sale of midfielder Flynn Downes, according to Dharmesh Sheth.

The Sky Sports News reporter wrote on X on Monday (15 July) that the 25-year-old has been given permission to have a medical with the newly promoted Saints, who he spent last season on loan with.

Sheth said Downes had been with the Hammers’ squad for a pre-season training camp in Austria but he is now set to complete his permanent move to the St Mary’s Stadium.

Flynn Downes close to leaving West Ham for Southampton

Downes was an integral part of the Southampton team that secured a return to the Premier League by beating Leeds United in the Championship play-off final back in May.

It was little surprise to see that Russell Martin was keen to keep the centre midfielder a part of his squad in the top flight but a deal was seemingly slowed down a little bit by the appointment of Julen Lopetegui at the London Stadium following the exit of David Moyes.

But, as expected, Downes has been allowed to seek new pastures, which is hardly a surprise given Lopetegui has a good stock of midfielders in his ranks, including the likes of James Ward-Prowse, Edson Alvarez and Tomas Soucek.

The Hammers brought Downes in from Swansea City back in July 2022 but he made just seven Premier League starts in his debut campaign and was allowed to find regular football with the Saints last term.
