West Ham United set to make final John Egan transfer decision

West Ham look set to decide against signing John Egan on a free transfer, according to ExWHUEmployee.

The Hammers insider reported via West Ham Way [10 September] that, while the 31-year-old was expected to be handed a short-term contract, Kaelen Casey may be trusted to step up instead.

Egan played 60 minutes in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Dagenham & Redbridge last week, though it appears the Irons will now choose against securing his signature.

West Ham United to snub John Egan transfer

While signing Egan would do little to dent the club’s finances, it appears that there are better options than the former Sheffield United centre-back.

He made just six Premier League appearances for the Blades last season. With fans desperate for Julen Lopetegui to call up academy graduates, that wish looks set to be granted.

Casey is one of those talents that many of the passionate fans at the London Stadium have been hoping to make a breakthrough, having made just one senior appearance last season.

John Egan West Ham
West Ham have identified John Egan as an alternative to Joel Matip.

George Earthy is proof that there is a direct route from the academy to the first team, and Casey looks set to be thrown straight into the deep end.

The departures of Kurt Zouma and Nayef Aguerd have left Lopetegui with Konstantinos Mavropanos, Max Kilman and Jean-Clair Todibo, so one more defender is a must this season.

In other West Ham news, the Hammers have been offered the chance to sign a Turkish free agent who played at Euro 2024.
