West Ham transfer news: Evan Ferguson gamble mooted after what’s happened

Alex Crook shared that West Ham United still have an interest in Brighton striker Evan Ferguson but admits it would be a “gamble” to bring him in.

The Hammers have been somewhat cursed with their striking options over the last few seasons with Niclas Fullkrug once again sidelined for an extended period.

Graham Potter is now in dire need of a striker with his only natural number nine choice at the moment being Danny Ings.

Speaking live on talkSPORT (08:55am), talkSPORT journalist Crook shared his thoughts on the Hammers making a move for the Irishman, who is currently out injured.

“There is still interest in Evan Ferguson but I think he’s got injured at the worst possible time, he’s still sidelined by an ankle problem and I don’t think he’s going to be back to play for Brighton at Ipswich on Thursday night so that would be a little bit of a gamble and that’s if Brighton want to let him go at all,” he said.

Evan Ferguson is too much of a gamble for West Ham United

Although it’s clear that Potter needs to bring in a new striker in the January window, it feels like Ferguson would be too much of a risk.

There are many areas that West Ham could look at strengthening in the winter window but with the injuries to Michail Antonio, Jarrod Bowen and now Fullkrug, it’s evident that all their recruitment focus should be turned towards a new number nine.

Whether it be a long-term solution or someone to be a six-month stop-gap until they can bid bigger in the summer, something needs to be done in January to help the Hammers alleviate their mounting injury woes up top.

A season or two ago, a move for the Irishman would have been lauded by fans and pundits alike but with his injury history and the fact that Danny Welbeck has often started over him this season, it feels like Potter needs to turn his attention elsewhere.

The Hammers have reportedly made another bid for Jhon Duran but that was instantly rebuffed so at the moment, everything is still up in the air.

In other West Ham news, Graham Potter would instantly win over fans with the transfer of this £12.5million ace.
