Ian Maatsen stalling on Chelsea contract amid West Ham and Burnley interest

Ian Maatsen is unlikely to make a decision on his Chelsea future until late on deadline day amid interest from West Ham and Burnley, according to Nizaar Kinsella.

The respected journalist reported for the Evening Standard‘s online edition on Thursday [31 August] that Maatsen is stalling on the offer of a new contract at Stamford Bridge.

West Ham have been regularly linked with the full-back this summer, while Burnley are also said to be interested in striking a deal after he impressed on loan at Turf Moor last season.

Test Chelsea’s resolve

West Ham look stronger in defence, midfield and attack compared to the start of the summer, even when factoring in the loss of Declan Rice, but they have yet to address the full-back positions.

Emerson is a solid option at left-back, but West Ham could do with bringing in some competition before the transfer window closes, particularly if there is still money to be spent.

It is little wonder attack-minded Maatsen has caught the eye of Premier League teams, having been named in the Championship Team of the Season last season, before impressing for Chelsea during their pre-season campaign.

The fact Chelsea have offered him a new deal shows they too like the look of Maatsen, but the defender is into the final year of his contract and they risk losing him for nothing in 2024 if he declines their terms.

West Ham

West Ham are aware of the situation and it appears a move for the Netherlands U21 international is not dead in the water just yet.

While it is not ideal Maatsen is taking so long to come to a decision on his future, it would be wise of the Hammers to get a bid ready to test Chelsea’s resolve on deadline day.

In other West Ham news, the Hammers have been given the green light to sign another player before the window closes.
