West Ham ‘to sign Idrissa Gueye in days’ as official approach made

West Ham have hit the gas in the summer market and have identified Metz striker Idrissa Gueye as their next signing.

After a slow start to the summer transfer window, West Ham are beginning to pick up the pace.

After completing the transfer of Kyle Walker-Peters last week, the Hammers have chosen Gueye as the next player to land at the London Stadium.

Graham Potter is keen to strengthen his squad for the forthcoming season and will not want to waste any more time this summer.

West Ham face competition from Southampton for Gueye

As reported by Alan Nixon via his Patreon on Tuesday (22 July), Southampton have made an official approach for Gueye after his standout season in the French second tier with Metz.

However, the Saints face competition for the “teenage sensation” from West Ham, who will watch the 18-year-old in action in a friendly this weekend as they are pushed for time to decide on the player.

It is understood that Metz wants around £18million for Gueye, who is rated as highly as Sadio Mane.

The forward’s international teammate, El Hadji Malick Diouf, has already moved to the London Stadium, and with Southampton playing their football in the Championship next season, it’s not difficult to imagine that Potter’s side could win the race for Gueye in the coming days.

Gueye would be a good investment

While Gueye has primarily played as a centre-forward, he can also play as a right winger or second striker. The teenager is known for his attacking, direct style of play and is always eager to get onto the end of chances.

The young talent scored five goals and provided one assist in 17 Ligue 2 appearances after arriving in France, and his output is likely to improve under the right manager and team.

Upon arrival, the Hammers should consider loaning him out for a couple of seasons. Gueye has yet to play in England and could need some time to get used to a new environment.

As such, a loan to a Championship club would be the best option rather than a Premier League move. This would give him a greater chance of gametime, which would accelerate his development.

Therefore, West Ham should consider Gueye as a player for the future.
