West Ham to bid for Pierce Charles as ‘stunning’ £4m news emerges from Sheffield Wednesday

West Ham have the worst defensive record in the Premier League this season.

Graham Potter is on the verge of being sacked as the club sits in 18th place in the Premier League table.

The Hammers have conceded 13 goals in their first five matches, as Mads Hermansen’s performances have come under scrutiny.

Hermansen was dropped for the defeat to Crystal Palace, and the goalkeeping situation continues to worsen.

However, this may change as West Ham renew their interest in promising goalkeeper Pierce Charles.

Pierce Charles’ valuation is set by Sheffield Wednesday

Journalist Alan Nixon has reported that Sheffield Wednesday want £4m for Charles, with the highly-rated goalkeeper gathering interest from West Ham and Strasbourg.

West Ham were interested in Charles in the summer, however due to Sheffield Wednesday’s financial issues, a move could not be materialised.

Offers for Charles were around £2m, but Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri will look for double that amount as the club is in financial turmoil.

Despite being out with a shoulder injury, Charles is the major asset at Sheffield Wednesday right now, and they may look to sell him and then have him back on loan for the rest of this season.

The 20-year-old goalkeeper has already made four caps for Northern Ireland and broke into Wednesday’s first team towards the end of last season.

With West Ham in desperate need of additional quality in goal, a move for Charles with an eye on future seasons could be a smart piece of business.

Mads Hermansen has been a terrible signing so far

Potter has a big part to play in the signing of Hermansen from Leicester, with West Ham spending £20m on the 25-year-old.

Mistakes in the heavy defeats against Sunderland and Chelsea showed that Potter has signed a goalkeeper who is not commanding when it comes to dealing with set-pieces.

The performance against Spurs was the final straw for Potter, who played Alphonse Areola against Palace.

If West Ham were to sign Charles in January, it would seem unlikely that he would come straight into the first team.

However, with the current crop of goalkeepers nowhere near Premier League level, Charles may just offer something different in between the sticks.
