West Ham set to make unpopular Andy Irving exit call after Wrexham rejection

Andy Irving looks set to leave West Ham United this summer.

The Hammers are desperate for an injection of pace in midfield and have already allowed Edson Alvarez to join Fenerbahce.

The 25-year-old is not a part of Graham Potter‘s plans at the London Stadium, and an exit makes sense for all parties involved.

However, West Ham supporters may not like where he ends up.

West Ham could sell Andy Irving to Millwall

West Ham and Millwall have a mutual hatred, but it may not come in the way of a move across the divide for Irving.

A report from Alan Nixon on 26 August, via his Patreon, claims that Irving has rejected a £3.5million move to Wrexham for personal reasons.

He states that Millwall may now try to match the offer or propose a loan deal, with the obligation of buying next year, but it may be a difficult sell due to the hostilities between the clubs.

Ultimately, though, West Ham have shown their hand with their valuation and if that is met they it seems unlikely they will step in the player’s way.

Transfers between West Ham and Millwall

The rivalry between the clubs is one of the most bitter in English football.

However, there have still been players who have played for both clubs despite the vicious rivalry.

Peter Reader never made a senior appearance for the Hammers and moved directly to their arch-rivals in 1961.

Dennis Burnett joined the Lions in 1967 for £15,000 after starting in the Irons’ youth team and making his first-team debut for the East London club.

They are the only direct transfers between the clubs, but Don Hutchinson moved to the Lions after being released by the Hammers.

The likes of Teddy Sheringham, Paul Allen, Tony Cottee and Lucas Neill have also played for both teams in their careers.

Still, if Irving is allowed to go to Millwall, it will be a controversial move, and if possible, the Irons should look for alternative suitors for the midfielder.

The reaction may be subdued because the Scotsman is not a key player for Potter’s side, so they will not miss him too much.

However, it may still prove to be a fractious move if he crosses a divide that is very rarely breached before the transfer deadline on 1 September.
