West Ham United would ideally like to keep Mateus Fernandes, but after relegation that is an unlikely outcome.

Even if Fernandes wanted to stay, the Irons would likely force a transfer anyway due to the E20 outfit needing to bring in at least £150million in player sales.

The Hammers are valuing the Portuguese midfielder at £80m, but questions have been raised as to whether any potential buyer would be willing to pay that price.

It is a steep cost for a player that has been relegated in back-to-back seasons, but West Ham fans will know that is a fair price to place on him.

Now, as the summer window beckons, the Irons could have hope that someone will meet that tag as Real Madrid are in the mix.

What has been said about Real Madrid’s interest in Mateus Fernandes?

There is a lot of drama currently circling at the Santiago Bernabeu with the Real Madrid presidential elections underway.

Jose Mourinho is waiting to see if he will be named manager, as the two-time Champions League winner is Florentino Perez’ choice to lead Los Blancos.

Now, according to journalist Ramon Alvarez, if Aurelion Tchouameni leaves Real Madrid, Mourinho has earmarked Fernandes as his replacement.

Of course, with Manchester United firmly in the race for the 21-year-old and currently not willing to pay the £80m price, the Hammers could use it to their advantage.

The Red Devils are desperate for midfielders, and right now the market for players in those positions is quite slim.

They have already been priced out of a £100m plus move for Elliott Anderson, and they will not want to go into the next season short of options.

Real Madrid entering the race to sign Fernandes is perhaps the best possible outcome for the Hammers this window.

When will Real Madrid’s situation be resolved amid Mateus Fernandes' interest?

With Real Madrid in the mix, any deal would have to wait until the president of the club is confirmed.

Results of the election will be shared on 7 June, and if Perez is once more selected to lead the Madridistas, that is the best outcome for West Ham.

Hopefully then, deals could move quickly and the Hammers can bring in quick cash to ease any of their financial worries.

The longer they wait to bring in that reported £150m, the easier it could be for rivals to steal their players in a cut-cost deal.

Fernandes is well-respected as a player across the football world, with Roberto Martinez stating: “Firstly, Mateus Fernandes… it's incredible what he's doing at the moment.

“We know his career path and what he achieved with the U21 national team. His energy and versatility are very important. He can be important for any team he's in.”

The 21-year-old will have every bit of confidence he can become a star at Real Madrid.
