West Ham make approach in bid to sign Breel Embolo as talks underway

West Ham United will challenge Premier League rivals Everton to the signing of Breel Embolo, according to TBR Football.

The online news outlet reported on 21 January that the Hammers have approached Monaco with an enquiry about the forward, who played all 90 minutes of a 1-0 Champions League win over Aston Villa on Tuesday, as Graham Potter prioritises a new striker in the winter transfer window.

Niclas Fullkrug has been ruled out for up to three months after sustaining a hamstring injury in the 2-1 loss against Aston Villa in the FA Cup (10 January).

However, the Irons must also fend off interest from Serie A outfit Como, who are leading the race for Embolo’s services and are already in direct contact with Monano for a potential deal.

West Ham United want to sign Breel Embolo

A few days ago, the name Embolo would have sparked excitement among the West Ham faithful, but now, David Sullivan’s move appears to be a desperate ploy.

The supporters did not have high hopes heading into the winter transfer window after Tim Steidten embarked on a frivolous spending spree throughout the summer.

However, Sullivan showed his hand after a £57 million offer for Aston Villa star Jhon Duran was swiftly rejected [David Ornstein]; therefore, the expectation was set.

Embolo can make an immediate impact in the Premier League, having contributed five goals and five assists in 25 appearances across all competitions thus far.

The Swiss international has been an integral part of the national side, which has recorded multiple round-of-16 and quarter-final finishes against the odds in World Cups and European Championships.

Nevertheless, Sullivan has set the bar for the quality of striker the Irons supporters wish to see brought to the London Stadium, and the chairman cannot afford to disappoint.

Although Embolo is the latest in a long line of names mooted with a move to East London, West Ham would be best served to focus their attention on Evan Ferguson after a “major” development arose in negotiations with Brighton [TEAMtalk].
