West Ham line up bid for Peruvian star Pedro Aquino

West Ham have set their sights on Peruvian midfielder Pedro Aquino ahead of a possible bid to Mexican outfit Club America, according to Aguilas Monumental.

Aquino, 26, moved to the Liga MX side in January 2021 and has played 31 times for the Peru national team, scoring three goals.

His performances for club and country, however, have drawn admiring glances from Europe, particularly his displays in the South American World Cup Qualifiers.

West Ham are reported to be lining up an offer for Aquino, who has a contract until 2023.

However, after “contact with sources close to Pedro Aquino’s environment”, Aguilas Monumental claim that the defensive midfielder is focused on his current commitments with Club America as they bid to retain the league title.

Life after Noble

Club captain Mark Noble will leave West Ham at the end of the 2021/22 campaign, leaving the Irons short of a central midfielder.

Tomas Soucek and Declan Rice are firmly established as the first-choice duo in David Moyes’ midfield, but they are the only two senior central midfielders on permanent contracts at the club with Alex Kral only on loan.

There is a clause to sign him on a permanent basis from Spartak Moscow, but even with his presence, Moyes needs at least one more to compete with the trio of Soucek, Rice and Kral, particularly if the Irons manage to make Europa again.

He’s not the biggest, standing at 5ft 9in, but that was no barrier to Javier Mascherano’s success in England.

The Argentine joined West Ham from Brazil side Corinthians before starring in the Champions League for Liverpool and Barcelona.

Aquino could make a similar jump in 2022.

In other West Ham news, the Irons want to sign this club’s Virgil van Dijk figure after a major development this week.
