West Ham likely to make offer for Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud

West Ham are likely to make an offer to Olivier Giroud once the striker’s contract at Chelsea expires, according to EuroSport.

Giroud, 34, will find himself out of contract next month but he doesn’t appear to be short of potential suitors ahead of the summer transfer window.

EuropSport reports that AC Milan want to sign the France international while the Hammers have had a “long-term interest” in him and are “likely to sound him out with an offer”.

West Ham

Good – but not amazing

Giroud is a class striker who’s impressed in a long spell in English football.

He’s played for both Arsenal and Chelsea, scoring big goals and providing us with some real show-stopping moments.

In total, the 34-year-old has scored 90 goals in 255 appearances in the Premier League while this term he managed 11 goals in 31 matches across all competitions for Chelsea.

Giroud is a great striker but we would feel a bit deflated if he was the only striker who David Moyes signs in the summer.

Firstly, he’s 34. We’ve got nothing against signing older players if they can provide an impact but we’d be way happier if the club signed a younger understudy to Michail Antonio or someone who can be a starting striker at the London Stadium for several years.

While we believe Giroud is still a good striker, how long will that last?

Secondly, the money. While Giroud will be a free agent next season, The Sun has reported he’s earning £135,000-a-week on his deal at Chelsea. Would he expect a similar deal to that at West Ham?

If so, we don’t want him.

Giroud isn’t a terrible option by any means and his ability in the air will be put into good use by players like Arthur Masuaku and Vladimir Coufal as they’re great crossers.

However, there have to be better options than him.
