West Ham deal to sign Darwin Nunez is off after bid rejected – ExWHUemployee

West Ham will not be signing Benfica star Darwin Nunez before the clock strikes 11pm tonight (Monday), according to ExWHUemployee.

Writing via the West Ham Way’s Patreon account on 31 January, the reliable source reports that a deal for the 22-year-old striker is “off” after a bid was turned down.

Ex said: “We have had a brief update from our main source in transfers: Nunez is unfortunately off they have turned down our offer and don’t want to do any deals until the summer on him – which we could do then.”

The Sun claimed earlier on deadline day that an offer of £37million plus add-ons was rejected by Benfica.

No one’s coming

What a waste of a transfer window this has been at the London Stadium.

It has been very clear what areas of the squad need adding to and plans should have been in place to get deals done as soon as 2021 turned into 2022.

Now, we’re hours away from February and hours away from ending the month without signing a new striker and without bolstering the defence.

Nunez seems like he would have been a perfect addition too.

The Uruguay international is young so would benefit from playing in the shadow of Michail Antonio with the view to overtaking him eventually in our starting line-up.

He’s also been on fire in Portugal, scoring 20 goals in 25 appearances across all competitions for Benfica.

Nunez scored against Barcelona – twice – and Bayern Munich in the Champions League group stages so he has no issue with stepping up to the big occasions.

If we don’t sign a striker this month, let’s just hope that we can revisit this in the summer.

In other West Ham news, there’s also been an update on Duje Caleta-Car.
