Ethan Galbraith was once a young prodigy at Manchester United, and now he could be heading for West Ham United this summer.

The 25-year-old signed for Championship side Swansea City last summer, in a reported £1.5million from League One outfit Leyton Orient.

A 16-cap Northern Ireland international, he'd spent two strong years with Orient in the third tier, netting six goals and providing eight assists from 51 appearances in 2024-25.

Galbraith moved from Northern Irish side Linfield to join Man United's academy in 2017 on a one-year scholarship deal, before penning a two-year professional contract in May 2018.

November 2019 saw him make his one and only competitive first-team appearance for the Red Devils, coming on as a late substitute against Kazakh outfit Astana in the Europa League.

Galbraith would remain at Old Trafford until as recently as the summer of 2023 though, showing just how highly though of he was in Manchester.

What was said about Ethan Galbraith at Man Utd?

During his time in Man United's academy system, Galbraith played over 30 times for both their Under-18s and Under-23s respectively.

He would routinely be involved in United's first-team training sessions too, and was evidently a talent that many inside Carrington believed could go far.

Unfortunately, it never quite worked out for Galbraith at Old Trafford, but he was once a player that had quite the label placed on him during his time there.

As quoted in a report from the Manchester Evening News in August 2020, a source close to Galbraith told of the standing he was held in at United.

"He's the best young player outside the core first-team group at the club," the source said at the time.

This was at a time when the likes of Mason Greenwood, Anthony Elanga, James Garner, Angel Gomes, Amad Diallo and Facundo Pellistri were all in United's academy side as well.

How good was Galbraith for Swansea in 2025-26?

To be ranked above those sorts of prospects speaks to the talent levels Galbraith possesses, even if he perhaps hasn't quite reached his full potential.

However, still only 25 and entering the prime years of his career, it may not be too long before he gets another opportunity at a Premier League club.

2025-26 was a bumper year for Galbraith, starting 36 of his 39 Championship appearances and playing over 3,100 minutes of league football.

As per FotMob, who list his primary position as a right-back, no Championship player in that position took more than Galbraith's 57 shots on goal in the second tier last term.

The same can be said for his 201 recoveries and 122 accurate long balls, whilst he also created 30 chances, completed 32 dribbles and won 168 duels respectively.

Capable of playing on the right side of defence and as a six, eight or even in the 10 in midfield, the Northern Irishman is a real Swiss Army Knife-type player.

With numerous exits expected at the London Stadium this summer, adding a player like Galbraith to Nuno Espirito Santo's team could help alleviate so much transfer pressure in that respect.

Having now proven himself to be a quality player in the Championship and with seemingly his best football ahead of him, signing Galbraith has to be a no-brainer for the Hammers this summer.
