West Ham and Dwight McNeil developments baffle, it goes against grain for Nuno
West Ham are looking to build a side that achieves instant promotion and Dwight McNeil is in their eyesight.
The Everton star has emerged as a transfer option, and with the likely departure of Crysencio Summerville, a winger will be required.
McNeil has plenty of experience in the English football pyramid, so he would certainly tick that box.
But is the signing of McNeil truly what the Hammers need ahead of next season?
After Everton agreed to sell McNeil for £20million to Crystal Palace in the winter window, West Ham do have a ceiling.
And with his contract expiring next season, whether they should or should not make a move lies in the data.
What do the numbers say about Dwight McNeil?
The West Ham scouts will know better, but on the surface, there is little inspiring about the possible arrival of McNeil.
Reports of the Hammers' interest have emerged from EXWHUEmployee over the last few days.
At 26 years old, the days of potential are behind him and he would be expected to be an immediate game-changer.
For Everton last season, he was not quite involved in the attacking play as you would have hoped.
According to Sofascore, in his 22 appearances in the Premier League, the Englishman got only one assist and failed to score a single goal.
Additionally, he averaged just 0.7 key passes per game and managed to create just one big chance.
McNeil is also poor in his battles on the pitch. Last season, he won just 43 per cent of all of his duels.
The winger is not a creative spark that would be required out wide, and he does not offer a goalscoring threat either.
Truthfully, it is hard to see why a move for McNeil, other than his ability to play on both wings is an attractive option.
Why McNeil is not a Nuno Espirito Santo signing
The move for McNeil would also be going off the trail of Nuno Espirito Santo's history as well.
The Portuguese manager has always been known to like his wingers have blistering pace as seen with his admiration for Adama Traore throughout the year.
And McNeil would not provide the manager with that quality.
If Summerville is sold, McNeil simply cannot be the direct replacement for the Dutchman.
It would be an uninspiring and simply confusing move, no matter what way you look at it.
