Watford make Angelo Ogbonna transfer decision after West Ham United exit
Angelo Ogbonna is set to join Watford before the 30 August transfer deadline following his West Ham United exit, according to Andrew French.
The Watford Observer journalist reported on Friday (23 August) that the 36-year-old has been lined up to fill the boots of Wesley Hoedt who is set to join Saudi Pro League side Al Shabab this summer.
Ogbonna left the Hammers at the end of his contract this summer, having made 17 appearances under David Moyes last season, to end his nine-year stay in East London following a £10million move from Juventus.
Will Angelo Ogbonna transfer to Watford after West Ham exit?
This news may not be particularly relevant to West Ham fans at this point of the window, but the Hammers faithful will be delighted to see Ogbonna find a new club after his London Stadium exit this summer.
While the Italian defender played a much-reduced role in his final season with the Irons, he was still one of the most popular players in Moyes’ ranks and he will always be a legend for his part in the Europa Conference League win.
Ultimately, the time was right for him and the club to part ways last summer and while some fans may argue his experience could have been valuable in the changing room, this move suggests he is eager to keep playing.
In the Championship, the defender should still have plenty to offer and if he is able to stay fit, he could prove to be a real asset to Watford and Tom Cleverly as they look to build on the successful finish to last season.
Hopefully, Max Kilman and Jean-Clair Todibo can go on to match Ogbonna’s efforts and lift some sort of silverware in a Hammers shirt having made big-money moves to East London ahead of the transfer deadline.
