Tim Steidten stance on West Ham United push for Jonathan David shared amid Lille transfer update

West Ham United chief Tim Steidten is hesitant about pushing for Jonathan David in the summer transfer window, according to Give Me Sport.

The outlet reported on its website on Monday (15 July) that the Irons have gone cold on the idea of signing the Lille centre forward this summer and will instead turn their attention to other striker targets.

Steidten and those around him at the London Stadium are not convinced that the Canadian international would be successful in the Premier League and compete with Michail Antonio for a starting role under Julen Lopetegui.

Because of this, Steidten is reluctant to negotiate for the 24-year-old, despite the fact he has entered the final 12 months of his contract with the Ligue 1 club.

Will West Ham United sign Jonathan David in the summer transfer window?

Both Lopetegui and Steidten will know that signing a new number nine simply has to be a priority for West Ham between now and the start of the Premier League season, given the Irons’ reliance on Antonio in the past.

But they cannot afford to waste money on yet another dud. The likes of Gianluca Scamacca and Sebastian Haller arrived for big fees in the past and were never able to hit the heights expected of them in a claret and blue shirt.

David has been impressive during his time in France, but that doesn’t mean that he would be able to hit the ground running in the Premier League.

Unless Steidten and his team are convinced he’s the right option, they’d be better off looking elsewhere.

The Irons have several targets on their shortlist at this moment in time and while it is unclear who they may or may not pursue a deal for, it does seem as though they will push to sign a new number nine sooner rather than later.

Hopefully, a deal will be completed before the new campaign gets underway.
