Fabrizio Romano has reported that Monaco have triggered the purchase option to sign Thilo Kehrer from West Ham United permanently.

The transfer expert added via his personal X account on Friday (17 May) that West Ham are set to receive around €11million (£9.4m).

Kehrer joined the Ligue 1 side on an initial loan deal in the January transfer window and has made 14 appearances to date.

Thilo Kehrer will not be major loss for West Ham United

It became clear in the first half of the season that David Moyes did not fancy Kehrer, and therefore a move away in the January window made sense.

With Moyes departing London Stadium in the summer, it perhaps opened the door for the defender to return at the end of the season.

However, Monaco had the right to purchase the 27-year-old and that always seemed the most likely outcome given his minutes for the club.

Thilo Kehrer is leaving West Ham United for good

Some Hammers fans will wonder if there was room for Kehrer, as Dinos Mavropanos has not exactly lit up London Stadium since arriving, while question marks remain over other centre-backs, but the decision has been taken out of the club's hands.

Ultimately, Kehrer will not be a massive loss to United. At the same time, every supporter will now wish him all the best as his switch to Stade Louis II becomes permanent.

And if nothing else, this near-£10m payment can now be put straight back into the squad, potentially on another central defender.
