Tammy Abraham bid now wanted as West Ham United lead transfer race for ex-Chelsea man

Roma are now hoping that West Ham or one of their transfer rivals will step forward and start the bidding for Tammy Abraham, according to Corriere dello Sport.

The Italian outlet reported on their website on 14 June that the former Chelsea striker is no longer in the plans at the Stadio Olimpico so they want to cash in as soon as possible to put together a budget for their own signings.

Everton, Aston Villa, Tottenham and Leicester are also interested in a move for the 26-year-old Abraham, with Roma hoping for an auction to develop between the clubs, although the Irons are believed to be leading the race to sign the Englishman [Gazzetta dello Sport, 11 June].

The Serie A side are themselves after another Hammers target in Atletico Madrid’s Samu Omorodion, whom West Ham have already had a bid rejected for this summer [Marcos Duran, 4 June].

West Ham lead Aston Villa and Tottenham in race for striker signing

Since Abraham is available for what has to constitute a knockdown fee at as low as £18.6million it would seem that the time to strike is now if West Ham are serious about bringing him in.

There are valid questions to be asked about his consistency, and how well he has recovered from the ACL injury which kept him out of most of the previous campaign.

The 11-cap Three Lions international followed up 15 Premier League goals for Chelsea as a regular starter in the 2019/20 season with just six the next year, and then scored 17 in Serie A before dropping down to eight the next season.

He only found the net once last term as he made just 12 largely-substitute appearances in all competitions after his injury, but as one of two, or even three, striker signings this summer he could be a decent option.

The Hammers risk losing the advantage for a player who is clearly available if they don’t put an offer in soon, especially with the transfer window now officially open.

Tim Steidten did strong work to hail the Luis Guilherme deal across the line but the German needs to right the wrongs of last summer and reinforce the main striker position, so if Abraham is a serious target there seems to be no time to lose.

In other West Ham news, the Irons have been offered the chance to sign another exciting attacking ace.
