West Ham United are making a "serious attempt" to sign Taiwo Awoniyi from Nottingham Forest "with immediate effect", according to Florian Plettenberg.

The Sky Sports Germany reporter shared via his personal X account on Wednesday (15 January) that talks are underway between the two Premier League clubs as West Ham desperately seek a new striker.

The Irons have been linked with numerous other players in the winter transfer window, but Awoniyi now appears to be top of the wishlist.

Taiwo Awoniyi goals record for Nottingham Forest

Awoniyi has scored 17 goals in 63 Premier League appearances for Nottingham Forest, averaging 0.27 goals per game.

That includes four headed goals, nine with his right and four with his left, so he is considered a bit of an all-rounder in that regard.

That certainly bodes well for the Irons, who quite simply need to get the signing of a new striker over the line ASAP.

Graham Potter was forced to play without a recognised striker against Fulham on Tuesday (14 January), albeit it mattered little in a morale-boosting 3-2 win.

Danny Ings was part of the squad, but it is clear that his days as a West Ham player are numbered. He simply cannot be relied upon to lead the line regularly.

Should Awoniyi come on board, that will be a massive boost for Potter ahead of seeing Jarrod Bowen and eventually Niclas Fullkrug return to the squad.

The 27-year-old may not be a name that gets supporters too excited, but he is a striker who knows how to find the net at this level. As far as January deals go, that has to be considered a massive positive.
