Stuart Pearce explains lack of transfer activity at West Ham
West Ham coach Stuart Pearce has moved to allay fan fears over the lack of transfer activity at the London Stadium this summer.
To date, French goalkeeper Alphonse Areola is West Ham’s only new senior signing after arriving on loan from PSG, while Craig Dawson also made his loan move from Watford permanent.
The Irons kick off their Premier League campaign away to Newcastle United in less than 72 hours time, but Pearce says the lack of signings is now through the want of trying.

Speaking on talkSPORT Breakfast [12/08/21], as relayed on their website, he said: “Dave [Moyes] only wants to bring players in that are better than what we’ve got, and if he feels as though he’s bringing bodies in for the sake of it to appease supporters, he’s a strong enough man not to do that.
“We’ve made bids for certain players and not been able to get one or two for varying reasons but a little bit of common sense has to come into it.
“It’s very easy to go out there and fill your squad out with individuals, but the bottom line is: if they’re not good enough and better than what you’ve got, you’re better off sitting tight.”

Moyes magic needed
Optimistic supporters may have expected GSB to align their movements in the transfer market with that of the success made by Moyes and his players last season, after the Irons finished in sixth position to secure Europa League football.
We didn’t have the biggest squad last season, with the injury-prone Michail Antonio our only centre-forward for the second half of the campaign.
There were also obvious gaps in the middle of midfield and in defence, while loan star Jesse Lingard has not returned to east London this summer.
As such, we expected the board to back Moyes and sign four, five, or six first-team players to cope with the rigorous fixture schedule that Europa League football has thrust upon us.
But with the start of the season just around the corner, it looks like Areola will be the only fresh face in our squad for the long trip to Newcastle.
Some serious business needs to happen before the conclusion of transfer deadline day on August 31, with a centre-forward, central midfielder and a central defender all required, while another attacker and full-back would be ideal.
In other West Ham news, the Irons want to sign this ‘Brilliant’ young attacker who shone on Sky Sports last weekend.
