‘Stressful’ hours ahead as West Ham Women want last-gasp midfielder transfer before deadline

West Ham’s women are approaching a busy transfer deadline day as less than 48 hours remain until the window closes.

The men’s team had a disappointing final day, with Igor Julio West Ham’s only signing, and the women’s side will be hoping that they can get their own targets over the line.

Rehanne Skinner helped the Hammers to a ninth-place finish, with her side just running out of legs in the final weeks of the season and dropping two places.

They finished one point behind Everton and two behind Liverpool, and the onus has been on improving their side this summer.

West Ham trying to sign midfielder in the final hours of the transfer window

Director of the women’s team board, Karren Brady, was happy to retain Skinner, and it is clear to see why after she made sure relegation wasn’t a possibility last season.

The Hammers have had to rebuild this summer, with key players such as right-back Li Mengwen departing West Ham Women, following her loan move from Brighton.

Jess Ziu and Camila Saez have both left on loan to Bristol City, leaving the Irons short in midfield.

According to BBC Sport reporter Emma Sanders on X, it is going to be a stressful 48 hours for a few Women’s Super League clubs, with West Ham trying to sign a midfielder.

The 2024/25 WSL table

West Ham are set to kick off their 2025/26 WSL campaign on 7 September when they visit Tottenham.

Skinner will be hoping that their squad is well prepared for the game, with the clock ticking to sign a much-needed midfielder.

Where can West Ham Women finish this season?

West Ham have shown excellent progress in the WSL, having gone toe-to-toe with clubs boasting better financial resources.

Skinner’s side failed to win any of their final two games last season, but they won’t be too downbeat.

They have an ideal start against a Tottenham side who struggled last season, and can take full advantage of the fact that they won their previous game against their rivals 2-0.

West Ham are well-positioned to push higher up the table and push for fifth place amongst a tight mid-table pack.
