Southampton on alert as West Ham told to make Ramsdale first Potter signing

Martin Allen

Martin Allen, better known as "Mad Dog" was a real fan favourite at West Ham when he made over 200 appearances for the Hammers between 1989 and 1995. After hanging up his boots after spells at QPR, West Ham, Portsmouth and Southend, Allen entered management with the likes of Barnet, Brentford, MK Dons, Leicester and Notts County. We're now delighted to have Martin as our new West Ham Zone expert.

Martin Allen has urged West Ham United to make Aaron Ramsdale the first signing under Graham Potter.

The Englishman took charge of his first game as Hammers boss against Aston Villa on Friday (10 January), falling to a frustrating 2-1 defeat in the end.

This gave the 49-year-old a good look at his new squad and he can now look forward to potentially making moves as the winter window goes on.

Former Irons midfielder Allen has named the Southampton keeper as his ideal January signing, while also putting forward a potential defensive addition.

Speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone, Allen said: "I feel that West Ham need a goalkeeper.

"With Southampton likely to get relegated, I would be looking at Ramsdale for a keeper to come in - he would be my first signing.

"Then I would look at a new right-sided centre-back, someone with some pace to play alongside [Max] Kilman.

"I think [Trevoh] Chalobah, who's on loan at Crystal Palace, would be an asset to put into that role to play alongside Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Kilman. I think he would be a good signing."

West Ham urged to sign Aaron Ramsdale

There has been a battle in between the sticks for the Hammers this season with Lukasz Fabianski and Alphonse Areola sharing minutes between them.

With that being said, Potter will likely want a regular number one option and Ramsdale could prove to be an ideal option given the quality he offers on the ball.

This could result in the exit of another shot-stopper from the London Stadium but will depend on Southampton's willingness to let their own number one leave.
