Southampton close in on multi-million Danny Ings deal as final West Ham United haggling underway
Southampton are closing in on a deal to re-sign West Ham United striker Danny Ings, according to Sunday People.
The newspaper reported via its print edition (page 59, 7 July) that the Hammers are prepared to let the 31-year-old go, with the two clubs haggling over the structure of the £6million transfer.
Russell Martin is said to be keen to bring Ings back to the club, viewing the forward’s top-flight experience as vital.
Ings scored 46 goals in 100 Southampton appearances before joining Aston Villa in 2021.
Will West Ham United sell Danny Ings to Southampton?
This is a transfer which makes sense for all parties involved.
Ings’ time at the London Stadium thus far hasn’t exactly been memorable, with the striker making just 20 Premier League appearances and scoring once last season.
Overall, he has managed just four goals and two assists in 52 appearances for the Hammers.
While he might have hoped that the arrival of Julen Lopetegui could inspire an upturn in form with the Hammers, it appears as if the Argentinian is happy to let him go.
Therefore, a move away for Ings seems like the best solution, and at this point in his career, a return to familiar surroundings could help him to rediscover his best form.
However, West Ham aren’t exactly well-stocked in the number nine position.
As a result, if they’re going to let Ings leave, then Lopetegui will want a replacement brought in.

He won’t be keen to rely solely on Michail Antonio next season and the club need to address this.
In other West Ham news, Lucas Paqueta is to push to leave the London Stadium.
