Southampton manager Tonda Eckert hasn't shut down talk of Taylor Harwood-Bellis' possible West Ham United move.

Nuno Espirito Santo is yet to really bolster his centre-back ranks via the transfer market this summer.

The versatile Joel Veltman has arrived, but as a right-back by trade, West Ham still appear to be in the market for a natural central defender.

Southampton's Harwood-Bellis has been strongly touted to the Hammers recently, after he enjoyed a superb 2025-26 campaign at St Mary's.

However, as the clock ticks closer to the 1 September deadline, it's becoming a case of who blinks first in the race for his signature.

There isn't smoke without fire here though, and Eckert will only have fanned the transfer flames further after being quizzed on the matter on Friday.

How much contact does Tonda Eckert have with West Ham-linked Taylor Harwood-Bellis?

West Ham have reportedly been told to pay £25million for Harwood-Bellis if they wish to sign the one-cap England international.

The Hammers have raised a significant amount of money through player sales this summer, so that could be a price they can afford to pay.

However, Irons chiefs will of course be looking to get the best deal possible for the defender, but Saints don't appear to be budging from their valuation.

As a result, it's a situation that threatens to go right down the transfer deadline.

Speaking on Friday as quoted by Daily Echo reporter Alfie House via X, Eckert was probed about where things stand with Harwood-Bellis.

"There is not really anything new. There is interest and conversations but no further update since Tuesday. I talk every day to him," he said.

So, what is Harwood-Bellis' contract situation at Southampton, and does it work in West Ham's transfer negotiation favour?

Why Southampton are in difficult Harwood-Bellis contract spot

Having proven himself to be a top defender at Championship level, Southampton won't be keen to let Harwood-Bellis leave.

A product of Manchester City's academy system, he left the Cityzens to join the Saints in the summer of 2024.

Upon his arrival in Hampshire, Harwood-Bellis penned a four-year contract at St Mary's.

That means he's contracted there until the summer of 2028, and so time is starting to run out for Southampton if they are going to cash in.

Should they keep hold of him for another season and his form dips or injuries happen, they may struggle to get £25m again with 12 months to run on his deal next summer.

So, that would suggest that selling him now would be the most sensible business decision the Saints could make.

But they also have promotion ambitions of their own, and losing him to a direct rival in that sense in West Ham would be a massive blow to their chances.

It's a tricky position to be in, but West Ham should ensure they keep the pressure on Southampton as his capture would be a huge deal.
