Sky Sports shares new Ben Johnson contract update at West Ham United
Ben Johnson is still in talks with West Ham over a new contract, with his current deal set to expire this summer, according to Rob Wotton.
The journalist reported live on Sky Sports News on Monday (3 June) that, while the 24-year-old is in talks over a new deal, clubs from England, Scotland, Italy and Spain are interested in the player.
Clubs will be able to sign Johnson on a free transfer this summer if he decides against extending his stay at the London Stadium, and the right-back is yet to decide his future.
“West Ham United defender Ben Johnson will consider all his options before deciding on his future. He’s out of contract this summer and talks over a new West Ham deal continue,” Wotton said.
“Johnson’s representatives have been approached by clubs in England and Scotland, and he’s also understood to have several options in Serie A and La Liga.”
Could Ben Johnson sign a new deal with West Ham United?
It is looking ever more unlikely that Johnson is going to extend his stay at the London Stadium after seven years in the first team set-up.
With just four Premier League starts last season, it would be understandable if the young full-back is keen on getting more consistent game time elsewhere.
However, the change of manager could be what persuades Johnson to put pen to paper on a new deal, with it being David Moyes’ decision to keep him on the bench for so many matches.
Julen Lopetegui might have a very different approach to utilising the 24-year-old, who has showcased his flexibility to deputise in any position on the pitch.
That kind of player is extremely important, especially when it comes to injuries, and West Ham might regret not doing everything they can to keep him at the club this summer.
In other West Ham news, McAvennie has told Lopetegui told to copy Aston Villa next season.
