Sky Sports journalist: West Ham in talks to sign striker Gabriel Barbosa, he's keen on England move

West Ham are in talks to sign Flamengo star Gabriel Barbosa as David Moyes hunts down a new striker, according to Dharmesh Sheth.

Writing via his personal Twitter account on Monday night, the Sky Sports News journalist reported that Gabigol, 25, is among a number of strikers who the Irons are “looking at” this month.

It is understood that the former Inter Milan ace is keen on a move to the Premier League as he sees England as “the perfect place” to ensure he makes Brazil’s squad for the 2022 World Cup.

We need this

It doesn’t matter too much how good our next striker signing is – we just need someone in to serve as a back-up to Michail Antonio.

Of course, we don’t want to see Moyes wasting money on a total and utter flop but it’s going to be impossible for us to sign someone who’s going to nail down a starting spot ahead of Antonio.

Gabigol is someone who’s got a lot of experience for a 25-year-old.

He’s played 17 times for Brazil in his career, scoring five times, and has played almost 200 times in the Brazilian top-flight for both current club Flamengo and Santos, where he started off.

Unfortunately, the striker was a bit of a flop in his previous spell in Europe, when he played for Inter Milan and Benfica.

That does worry us slightly, but Gabigol seems desperate to make Brazil’s squad for the World Cup in Qatar and that means he’ll be super keen to make an impression here in East London.

We’ll see how this progresses but we’ll be happy with this signing – simply as it adds some much-needed depth to the attack.

In other West Ham news, this one Irons star is set for a bumper new deal at the London Stadium as interest sparks GSB into action.
