Graham Potter is still searching for a winger for West Ham this summer transfer window.

With Mohamed Kudus moving to Tottenham earlier this summer, the Hammers are yet to bring in a replacement.

The former England international is now back at Chelsea after his loan spell at Arsenal.

However, the move to bring in the former Premier League winner will likely not impress former Hammer Shaka Hislop.

Shaka Hislop was against Sterling’s move to Arsenal

Sterling’s drop-off has been well-documented in recent years.

The former Manchester City star was once one of the best players in the Premier League, and consistently hit double-figure goals.

However, since his move to Chelsea, the 30-year-old has been poor, and was sent out on loan to Arsenal last season.

At the Gunners, Sterling struggled further and only netted a single goal in 28 appearances.

  • Sterling has fallen out of favour at Chelsea
  • The winger was sent out on loan to Arsenal last season, but didn't impress
  • Chelsea are open to another loan move for Sterling this summer, with West Ham interested

This will come as no surprise to Hislop, who “didn’t see the value” in Sterling when speaking to ESPN on 30 August 2024.

“I understand Arsenal want bodies, want pedigree and they find that in Raheem Sterling, but Sterling has done nothing in the last two years that suggests he makes Arsenal any better, even as a squad player,” he said.

"And so if we are here talking about a £20million package or £150,000 a week for a player who is there to cover Saka, to give him a rest, to maybe add some experience to a dressing room, I find that a lot of money to pay for a player who doesn’t make you better. I just don’t see the value in this."

Can Sterling replace Kudus?

With West Ham clearly keen on Sterling, the question is now whether the winger is capable of replacing Kudus.

However, nothing from recent seasons suggests that the 30-year-old is able to match his output.

This would likely make Sterling another failed transfer ahead of the new season.

Even on loan, it is simply not worth West Ham splashing millions on wages for someone who clearly is not good enough.

Hopefully, Potter will soon see sense and move on to more exciting targets to replace the Ghanaian international.
