Sean Whetstone shares what West Ham United sources keep saying about Tammy Abraham

West Ham United sources have said that reports linking Tammy Abraham with a move to East London are “simply not true”, according to Sean Whetstone.

Posting via the West Ham Football X account (27 August), the Hammers writer reported that senior club sources had made clear ‘for a third time’ that the Irons will not be signing the AS Roma striker.

Reports from Italy over the course of the summer have linked Abraham with a return to the Premier League at the London Stadium [Corriere dello Sport, 27 August], but Whetstone’s source within the club has rubbished these links.

Whetstone added that Abraham’s waning form in the past two seasons, as well as his surgery on an ACL injury last year and “huge” wage demands, all factor in to the club’s decision to not sign the 26-year-old.

West Ham wise to steer clear of Tammy Abraham transfer

Julen Lopetegui had plenty of positions to address upon his appointment at the London Stadium in May, with centre-forward being one of the clearest areas in which the Hammers needed to fix this summer.

However, Abraham hasn’t proven to be the answer for the Spaniard, who instead signed 31-year-old Germany frontman Niclas Fullkrug from recent Champions League finalists Borussia Dortmund.

With fellow veterans Michail Antonio and Danny Ings still in tow, despite reports of the latter heading elsewhere [Darren Witcoop, 26 August], it’s clear that Lopetegui has ticked the ‘striker’ box on his wishlist.

Further additions could still be in the pipeline with the Hammers spending over £130million this summer [AS, 24 August], but it’s increasingly unlikely that they’ll part with a big sum, or any for that matter, for Abraham.

A first win of the season against Crystal Palace on 24 August came with the likes of Fullkrug, Lucas Paqueta and Jarrod Bowen coming to the fore, and with such an array of attacking talent, West Ham have little need for Abraham this season.

In other West Ham news, Julen Lopetegui took a different approach to his half-time team talk in the Irons’ match at Crystal Palace.
