Sean Whetstone shares what he’s been told about West Ham transfer for Angel Gomes
West Ham United have been negotiating with a third party for the free transfer of Lille ace Angel Gomes, according to Sean Whetstone.
The Hammers insider, posting via his West Ham Football X account (22 January), said Claret & Hugh have been told (22 January) that while talks “have been held” Graham Potter and his men are “nowhere near” agreeing terms with the Englishman.
The report also adds that two other Premier League clubs are also “in negotiations” with the playmakers’ representatives but it’s also “uncertain” how close they are to agreeing a switch.
“Rumours have been circulating that the Hammers are close to agreeing a deal with the England midfielder, but Claret and Hugh understand that is not the case,” he wrote.
“The Hammers have been trying to negotiate with Gomes’ representatives via a third party, and talks have been held. However, we have been informed that West Ham are nowhere near agreeing terms with the player.
“It is also understood that Gomes’ representatives are in negotiations with two other Premier League clubs, although it’s uncertain how close they might be to agreeing a deal.”
Angel Gomes would be an impressive addition for Graham Potter and West Ham United
Even though the Hammers’ midfield ranks are fairly stacked at the moment, it’s undeniable that the addition of the England international would boost their chances of winning games tenfold.
The 2024/25 season has been fairly difficult for the Hammers with a change of manager to deal with and the added stress of new faces needing to be integrated.
While some players such as Aaron Wan-Bissaka have helped improve West Ham’s ranks, others have fallen short such as Guido Rodriguez.
Since he first kicked a ball in the Premier League, fans have felt like he wasn’t up to the level needed at the London Stadium with the Argentinian international being repeatedly linked with a return to Real Betis in the winter transfer window.
Carlos Soler is another midfielder who has question marks above his head as there have been times when his class has shone through and others when he may as well have been sat on the sidelines.
Gomes would add some speed and help create more chances at the London Stadium and the fact he’s available on a free transfer is just the icing on top of the cake.
