West Ham are understood to be interested in Sevilla winger Ruben Vargas, who has certainly made his impact felt elsewhere.

Nuno Espirito Santo is looking for attacking reinforcements to ensure an immediate return to the Premier League.

The Switzerland winger notched three goals and six assists in 24 La Liga matches last season.

Vargas has performed admirably at the World Cup so far, with two goals and one assist in four matches at the tournament.

He started his career with Luzern, before moves to Augsburg and then the Andalusian club.

It is an aspect of his time with the Bundesliga outfit that makes it an interesting move.

What record does Ruben Vargas hold?

Despite the fact that he plays for the Red Crosses at international level, he is also from the Dominican Republic through his father.

Vargas holds the record for being the first player of Dominican descent to play in the Bundesliga when he signed for the Bavarian outfit.

However, he would not qualify for that in England, as former Leeds United man Junior Firpo is the first player to achieve that milestone.

He would definitely not be the first Swiss player, either, as there have been many to grace the top-flight since its inception.

Vargas would be the sixth Swiss player to represent the Hammers, as they have previously had Valon Behrami, Fabio Daprela, Raphael Spiegel, Edimilson Fernandes and Albian Ajeti on their books.

Why Vargas makes sense for West Ham

Vargas would likely rip up the Championship, as his pace, dribbling and crossing are regarded as his best abilities.

His numbers in the Spanish top flight were not that impressive, in truth, but he was dealing with injury issues so they can be excused.

The Irons need players who can make an impact in the second tier and then maybe be moved on for a profit when they make it back up, at which point they can add higher-calibre talent.

At 27 years old, the winger could still have some resale value if he has an impressive campaign in the division.

Depending on the fee, it could be a very clever move for the E20 side if he produces the goods and then they make profit by flipping him.
