Roshane Thomas: Manchester United and Manchester City want West Ham star Declan Rice
Manchester United and Manchester City are rivalling each other to sign West Ham star Declan Rice this summer, according to The Athletic’s Roshane Thomas.
The West Ham correspondent dropped the big claim on the latest ‘U Irons’ podcast [19/05/21].
“What I’m hearing regarding Declan Rice’s future is it’s between Manchester United and Manchester City,” he said.
“It seems like Manchester City will have a lot of money to spend this summer and if Fernandinho does leave it seems they will make a push for Declan Rice.
“It seems likely Manchester United will move on from Fred this summer and they’ll look at someone like Rice.
“In terms of what I’ve heard, it’s between those two clubs.”
Futile attempts
We don’t doubt that the two Manchester clubs will be fighting tooth and nail to sign Rice but we just can’t foresee a scenario where he leaves the London Stadium this summer.
Of course you never know with our owners who are prone to making bizarre decisions that are at odds with the ambitions of the club and supporters.
But surely it would take an absolutely monstrous bid to even consider the midfielder’s exit.
We’re talking nine digits big.
There might come a time where Rice feels he has outgrown the club and wants to move on to fulfil his own ambitions and goals in football, but that point hasn’t been reached yet.
At 22-years-old Rice has plenty of years left to achieve his aims and as a fixture in the England starting XI already it has been proven that he doesn’t need a major move to impress his international manager.
Furthermore, we need just one point against Southampton on Sunday to bring Europa League football back to East London next season and that should be another boost in our desire to keep Rice at the club.
We’re not worried just yet.
