Report: West Ham favourites to sign Torino striker Andrea Belotti
Per Torino Graneta, West Ham have emerged as frontrunners to sign 27-year-old Torino forward Andrea Belotti this summer.
Edin Dzeko, whose contract looked like it was going to be terminated after disagreements with manager Paul Fonseca, was one of the Hammers’ top transfer targets.
However, now he seems to have been given a new lease of life, as newly-appointed Jose Mourinho has been an admirer of the Bosnian and could hold onto him for another season.
Initially, Maurizio Sarri was tipped to take over the reins, making Belotti his preferred target, but Mourinho’s arrival has thrown a spanner in the works as he does not rate the Italian too highly.
This opens the door for West Ham and has made them favourites to secure the player’s signing this summer.
Sign him up
While these are only initial reports, it’s a big deal for the Hammers to be frontrunners for a striker, who not long ago was on the radar of top European clubs.
In 2017, when Belotti’s release clause of €100m (£86.3m) expired, Torino president Urbano Cairo said that the clause in his new deal would allow him to leave for €150m (£129.5m) – a price the club valued him at back then. [Football Italia]
That put off suitors just as Cairo had planned, but now there seems to be a realistic possibility of him finally parting ways with the club.
Belotti has averaged 15 league goals in each of the last two seasons, and this term he is only three short of achieving that feat. [WhoScored]
While the numbers may suggest he’s declined, he’s played a more nuanced role for Fonseca, dropping deeper than usual to create chances for others.
It’s no surprise that he’s registered as many assists (6) as he did in his last two seasons combined.
The 27-year-old is a hard-working team player who guarantees goals no matter where he plays.
He comes with a nearly unblemished injury record too. Per Transfermarkt, since the start of the 2018/19 season, Belotti has missed only five games through injury (excluding the two he missed because of Covid-19).
Given the torrid time the Hammers and David Moyes have had with injuries, this is a statistic that could tip the scale in Belotti’s favour and make him their first-choice transfer target.
