Peterborough United confirm fee agreed with West Ham over Kai Corbett

Peterborough United have confirmed the signing of 19-year-old striker Kai Corbett on a long-term deal after his departure from West Ham.

The teenager came through the Irons academy but announced via Instagram earlier on Monday [15/11/21] that he had rejected the club’s offer of a professional contract to pursue his dream of first-team football.

Later on Monday, Championship strugglers Peterborough confirmed via their official Twitter account that Corbett has signed for the club on a “long-term deal for an undisclosed fee”.

Undisclosed

Corbett’s West Ham contract expired earlier this year but the Irons were due compensation for training fees as a result of rules relating to players under the age of 24 in England.

It’s unlikely the club received a big total – possibly a five-figure fee, or in the lower regions of six figures – but there may be future clauses that have been agreed upon.

That could see the Irons receive fees based upon any potential transfer he makes in the future, such as a percentage of the fee that Peterborough sell him for.

For Corbett, it’s now a chance to prove himself at a good level with a club that is renowned for handing young talent the chance to showcase their abilities.

‘Posh’ are widely regarded as one of the best sides to join as an emerging talent or someone looking to earn a move to a more illustrious club.

They’re currently 21st in the Championship, just three points above the relegation zone, and they face a tough battle on their hands to avoid an instant return to League One.

Regardless, though, Corbett should be handed a chance to play, particularly if they do get relegated at the end of the season.

In other West Ham news, the Irons are plotting a bid to sign this two-time title-winner admired by Jurgen Klopp, and the 23-year-old is open to a move.
