Pablo Fornals exit stance emerges as West Ham United contract news drops on Tuesday

Pablo Fornals still wants to leave West Ham despite the news that his contract is being extended at the London Stadium, according to Claret and Hugh.

After the 6foot2 editor Sean Whetstone reported on Twitter on Tuesday (5 December) that the Hammers had activated a one-year extension in the Spanish midfielder’s deal, club insider Claret and Hugh confirmed on its website that the clause has been triggered.

It added that a club source has revealed the 27-year-old, who has attracted interest from La Liga sides Barcelona [Fabrizio Romano, 23 November] and Sevilla [Estadio Deportivo, 17 November], still wants to leave the Irons, but they hope to get some money for him next summer by extending his contract.

Asked if Fornals wants to leave, the source said: “Yes, he does, but by extending the deal, we should get some money in the summer.”

Let him go

It makes sense for the West Ham hierarchy to trigger the clause in Fornals’ contract to ensure they do get some money for a player they paid Villarreal more than £20million for in 2019.

He has been a solid servant for the club over the past few years as he gives everything when he steps out onto the pitch and has been part of some special moments.

But the midfielder’s performances have dropped off a bit in recent times and he now finds himself very much down the pecking order at the London Stadium.

That has led to the Spaniard becoming slightly frustrated about his game time, so it’s no surprise that he is keen to move on to secure some more regular first-team football elsewhere.

With his contract situation resolved and the Hammers now likely to receive a fee for him, the best thing would be for us to let him go because the last thing anyone wants is an unhappy player in the camp.

In other West Ham news, one Irons star has shared a “fascinating” admission on why he signed for the club.
