Niclas Fullkrug developments confirmed as West Ham United set to sign striker after medical

Borussia Dortmund have confirmed Niclas Fullkrug has been allowed to leave their training camp as he closes in on a move to West Ham.

The Bundesliga giants issued a statement on Saturday 3 August that the 31-year-old has left Switzerland “for talks with another club”.

That club is widely expected to be the Hammers as the German striker is believed to be inbound for a medical after Tim Steidten secured a €30million [£25.6m] deal [Florian Plettenberg, 2 August].

He will be joined by free agent midfielder Guido Rodriguez for testing on Saturday [Fabrizio Romano, 2 August] as the Irons close in on a trio of key signings, with Crysencio Summerville’s medical already passed [Sky Sports, 2 August] ahead of a move from Leeds United.

Borussia Dortmund confirm exit after West Ham deal agreed

Dortmund weren’t planning to shift the Germany international [Patrick Berger, 31 July] but with Steidten and Julen Lopetegui clearly having grown impatient attempting to prize top striker target Jhon Duran away from Aston Villa the club have moved decisively to bring in a proven scorer.

The former Werder Bremen forward appears to have the profile to be a success in the Premier League and fills a clear need up front.

And it isn’t impossible that the technical director could still look to push for Duran in addition if the budget is there or sales are made.

But it would be extremely risky to wait for negotiations over the Colombian to reach a conclusion with no insurance in place to improve the goalscoring options.

Both Michail Antonio and Danny Ings have been linked with exits in recent months but it would still leave numbers short to let either go without further attacking reinforcements.

There is surely mileage in retaining the Jamaica international at least as he has been a vital contributor at the London Stadium for years but is no longer suitable to be the top option.
