Niclas Fullkrug offended by what Borussia Dortmund did as West Ham United close in on transfer

West Ham United transfer target Niclas Fullkrug was not best pleased that Borussia Dortmund signed a new striker this summer, according to Ruhr Nachrichten.

The German publication reported on 2 August that people close to Fullkrug had said the 31-year-old forward found it “quite offensive” (as translated via Google) when Serhou Guirassy arrived from Stuttgart last month.

Fullkrug is on the brink of sealing a switch of his own to the London Stadium, and has left Dortmund’s training camp (Dortmund’s official website) in order to complete the remainder of the transfer [3 August].

Germany international Fullkrug had only recently re-joined the Dortmund squad following his exploits at EURO2024, with the Hammers set to pay up north of £25million for the striker’s services [Patrick Berger, 2 August].

Any worries Fullkrug had over being displaced by Guirassy as Dortmund’s go-to striker will come to an end if and when he completes his switch to the Hammers – where he’ll be the undisputed first choice.

While not the youthful alternative to Michail Antonio and Danny Ings many Irons fans were hoping for, Fullkrug still brings a healthy offering of goals scored on the biggest of stages.

A 31-year-old may not be seen as the long-term solution to the club’s striker problem, but the three-year deal offered to Fullkrug suggests this is still a move with longevity in mind.

So too would have been a transfer for Guirassy, which the Irons had been keen to explore at the back end of the previous campaign [HITC, 25 May], long before he made the switch to Dortmund.

Guirassy arriving in East London never looked likely, but with Fullkrug spearheading a new-look Hammers side next season, they could become an equally dangerous attacking team.
