Neil Moxley calls on Harry Maguire to reject Saudi interest amid claims his contract is ‘putting off’ West Ham United

Neil Moxley has urged Manchester United defender Harry Maguire to remain in the Premier League amid interest from West Ham and Saudi Arabia.

The Sunday People’s chief sports writer said on pages 60/61 of the newspaper’s print edition on 23 July that the 30-year-old’s contract is “putting off” the Hammers.

Moxley said that with the Saudis now sniffing about, the England international would be a “damn sight better off in the Premier League” and suggested that even a temporary switch would help put him in the shop window.

Lower demands

There is no doubt that if Maguire really does want to move to another Premier League club that he’s going to have to lower his demands to enable that to happen.

The Daily Mail reported that the centre-back is currently earning £190,000-a-week at Old Trafford and there are very few clubs – if any – that are going to be willing to match that following his performances over the past couple of seasons.

There is still a potentially very good defender in there and he’s certainly not past it at 30, but the Hammers simply can’t afford to break their wage structure to bring him in.

West Ham

Perhaps a loan move could be the best option if Man United are willing to pay a substantial portion of his wages, with Maguire hopefully having the appetite to show he is still capable of performing at a high level on a weekly basis.

For anything to happen, though, something is going to have to give because he isn’t currently worth the reported salary and there doesn’t seem to be anyone that is willing to pay it.

If the situation doesn’t change soon, it’s time for us to move on.

In other West Ham news, one Hammers favourite could be heading for the exit door as a move edges closer.
