Nayef Aguerd transfer: West Ham United twist emerges in difficult update

West Ham United let Nayef Aguerd join Real Sociedad on loan in the summer transfer window.

The Morocco international has been a key player for the La Liga outfit this season, making the Hammers’ decision to send him away confusing.

While the 28-year-old had been a key player for the Irons in previous seasons, Julen Lopetegui didn’t seem to trust him.

It remains to be seen what the future holds for the centre-back once he returns from Spain with the arrival of Graham Potter at London Stadium

Real Sociedad want to keep Nayef Aguerd

Real Sociedad will not find it easy to sign Aguerd from the East London club, according to Estadio Deportivo.

The new outlet reports (7 February) that La Real would be delighted to keep the defender, but it will be a difficult operation as his contract at the Hammers runs until 2027.

As of now, nothing has been decided by the Irons, and the Spanish outfit are waiting for developments at the London Stadium.

Potter has several defensive options at West Ham, including Max Kilman, Jean-Clair Todibo and Konstantinos Mavropanos.

West Ham United should not sanction Nayef Aguerd transfer

The Hammers’ faithful would have liked to keep Aguerd, considering his performances over the last few years.

While it made sense for the Irons to sanction the Moroccan centre-back’s exit due to the several reinforcements in the backline, they should have kept him in hindsight.

Todibo was undoubtedly one of the most promising defenders in Ligue 1 last season, but the Frenchman has struggled to adapt to the Premier League so far.

Mavropanos has also found himself in and out of the team after putting in some underwhelming performances.

Potter seems keen on playing three centre-backs in his starting lineup, with Vladimir Coufal featuring in the backline in recent matches.

The Czech ace has struggled for game time this season, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see the 32-year-old leave the East London club soon.

Aguerd has the quality to form a solid partnership with Kilman and Todibo, making Potter’s decision come the summer seemingly obvious.
