Nayef Aguerd exit update emerges at West Ham United as new defender wanted

West Ham United are looking to sign defenders this summer as Nayef Aguerd edges closer to leaving, according to Dharmesh Sheth.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT (12 June) the Sky Sports reporter suggested that a centre-back could be needed to replace one departing player.

The Hammers are looking to add to their squad under new head coach Julen Lopetegui ahead of the new Premier League season.

This has seen Tim Steidten take charge of the transfer business, with plenty of incoming activity being considered to replace outgoing stars.

He said: “I think it is clear that that’s an area they do want to strengthen, that there’s lots of talk about Nayef Aguerd potentially leaving West Ham United – that’s definitely one to keep an eye on.

“But the fact that they are going in for a centre-back in Fabricio Bruno would suggest that that is definitely an area they are prioritising during this summer’s transfer window.”

Nayef Aguerd set to depart West Ham this summer

After a positive campaign in his first season with the club, which saw him lift the Europa Conference League, Aguerd could now depart.

The Morocco international had a great World Cup campaign but has never quite reached that level since for the Hammers.

This has often seen him out with injury or displaced by the likes of Kurt Zouma and Konstantinos Mavropanos throughout the season.

As a result, a move away could prove to be a useful piece of business for both parties as Steidten looks to balance the books and bring new players in.

West Ham
Nayef Aguerd has made just 39 Premier League appearances since arriving at West Ham in 2022.

Signing someone like Bruno would certainly be a risk, especially after letting an experienced player like Aguerd go first.

Steidten has to get it right in his first summer with full control – beyond the reach of David Moyes – but there is time to put that right.

Selling Aguerd may be a way to bring in funds, but it could prove to be a regret later down the line.
