Mohamadou Kante sale makes sense at West Ham as exit fee named
Mohamadou Kante is reportedly attracting major transfer interest this summer, with West Ham United said to be holding out for a big fee.
It has been reported that West Ham have set an asking price for Kante at €20million (£17.2m).
Kante signed for West Ham as an 18-year-old from Paris FC in the summer of 2024, penning a five-year contract at the London Stadium.
He immediately was sent back out on loan to Paris FC for the 2024-25 season, where he made only six competitive appearances in all competitions.
Clearly rated highly by West Ham and other clubs across the continent, Kante's performances and production, however, hasn't provided clear evidence that he's a £17m player right now.
Mohamadou Kante's 2025-26 West Ham numbers weren't great
Despite making 11 appearances in the Premier League for West Ham last season, remarkably, that only culminated in just 67 minutes of top-flight action.
The Frenchman made zero league starts and failed to provide a single goal contribution, seeing the majority of his minutes in 2025-26 with the Under-21s.
With them, Kante played nine times in Premier League 2 last term, scoring three goals and providing one assist.
So, whilst that production isn't bad at all, his underlying numbers paint the picture of a midfielder who is still incredibly raw and unrefined.
As per FotMob, Kante completed just 82.6 per cent of his passes successfully in PL2 last term, whilst also playing a mere 1.89 accurate long balls per game and was dribbled past seven times in total.
Meanwhile, he also ranked in the bottom 13.7 percentile of all defensive midfielders in that division for his 3.41 defensive contributions per game.
His 27.3 per cent dribble success rate placed him in the bottom 19.6 per cent, whilst his average of 1.14 times dispossessed per 90 ranked him in the lower 23.2 per cent respectively.
Kante's 47.7 per cent duels won ratio put him in the bottom 26.2 percentile of his positional rivals, and he also averaged just 55.7 touches, 0.25 interceptions and 0.88 clearances per 90 respectively.
Kante sale could mean West Ham stay for a first-team star
It's no secret that West Ham need to raise significant funds through player sales this summer.
As a result, a host of key first-team players are sure to leave the London Stadium in the coming weeks, but it the Hammers will surely want to keep some of their best stars.
Selling a player like Kante for around £17m, who is yet to prove himself at senior level and would still see the Irons turn a significant profit, could put them in a position where they can afford to retain a top player.
West Ham would surely look to install a sizeable sell-on clause in any Kante sale too, meaning they would set themselves up for further riches through him in the future if he reaches his potential.
All things considered then, and if West Ham can get an offer in the region of their reported £17m asking price for Kante this summer, that has to be a no-brainer to cash in.
